Vienna is a great city for walking. Kuah and I have walked everywhere so far. Even with many days being well into the 90’s we still enjoy being outside and seeing all of the amazing architecture. Although some of my walking routes have been created solely by following the shade.
Many of the buildings in Vienna are made from a beautiful stone. While this gives them an amazingly grand appearance it requires lots of upkeep. In fact we have seen quite a bit of scaffolding around as over time this stone turns black and needs to be washed. You can see, in the below picture, a building that has one section washed an another needing a bit of a clean.
Everywhere you turn there is a cool building or detail on a building that is intricate and amazing. It’s on of the things that makes walking here so fun. You can head in any direction and see something interesting and fun.
Another thing that has made walking fun is Kuah’s use of Google maps. He’s found a way to tell which areas have lots of shops and restaurants and plots general routes that include those areas.
While I enjoy much or the architecture I must admit that I don’t often know what the building is or why it is there. This of course doesn’t stop me from whipping out my phone and snapping pics. The only thing to be careful of is that we don’t stop so many times that we miss our 10 mile a day walking goal.
Along with the architecture there are quite a few amazing statues. They pay a lot of attention to detail and many seem to tell a story. Quite a few tell a violent story. The only thing I have found that I don’t like about the statues is that many of them are covered in a wire netting. I’m sure this is to protect them from both birds and people and also reduce money on maintenance but it does detract from their look.
