Our final day in Venice turned out to be even rainier than the day before. We walked a bit in the area by the train station but soon had to take cover in a coffee shop. We were lucky to get a table under an umbrella and watch the rain while staying dry. Once it let up we decided it was time to head out of Venice. After taking a look at the weather for the afternoon we chanced a stop in Ferrara on the way home. It turned out to be a good gamble as the weather was beautiful.
Ferrara was known to attract some of the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was the first renaissance city to be developed using a complex renaissance plan. It’s architecture varies from the late medieval and the renaissance style. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
We started off our visit with a meal at Antica Trattoria Max. Although it had good reviews when we walked in there were no other customers which made me a bit nervous. But the waiter was friendly and the meal was good. To be honest I don’t remember exactly what the meal was. I know I got a squid dish and Kuah had a ravioli and I believe a squid dish as well. I do remember the free dessert bite they gave at the end was chocolate cherry. I don’t forget sweets. For the rest the pictures below can guide you.
The owner had an extensive whiskey collection so Kuah tried one. He is on a mission to find one that is as good as he had on one of our early trips to Boston. This one, alas, was not it.
After lunch we took a walk around the town and then ended up touring Castle Estense. The first part of the castle was built in 1385 by Niccolo II d’Este as defenses against a revolt. This is the origin of the moat and drawbridge. Later it was joined to a military building. Eventually it became a residence of the court. The castle had a lot of beautiful frescoes and the dungeon was still intact to crawl through. We were also able to climb on of the towers to see the view of the town.
After the castle tour we finished our drive back to our Airbnb. Overall it turned out to be a great day!
