At the Campo de’ Fiori, one of Rome’s oldest markets, there is a pizza place that has the reputation for serving the best pizza in Rome. I first read about it in Food & Wine magazine. But have since seen it mentioned elsewhere. Of course Kuah and I couldn’t pass up checking out to see if it really was the best.
We walked around the market till we found the stall CasaManco. Although there were people inside it wasn’t open yet. So we headed to the supermarket to pick up a few essentials. Then we stopped at a coffee shop and Kuah enjoyed a cappuccino while I had a nice hot cup or chamomile tea. We were lucky that they had a free clean bathroom we could use as well.
We went back to the pizza shop but they weren’t open yet. Kuah was hungry so he decided to try a Piadina from the stall next to it. It has a light tasty dough that they grill fresh for the wrap and then fill it with fresh vegetables meats and cheeses. It was a good small snack that I happily stole a bite of.
When the pizza stall finally opened we were able to try lots of different combinations. Our favorite pizza had squash flowers, stracciatella cheese and anchovies on it. Kuah loved the hot crust with the cold cheese. Although I’m not a huge fan of anchovies they added the perfect zing. We also had a zucchini pizza with mozzarella cheese. By then I was pretty full but Kuah was ready for another round. He got one that had cheese and lemon. I tried a bite and it was good. He also got one that was a thinner crust with just a tomato sauce on it. His final selection had some meats on it as well. I loved the chewy crusts on it and all of the fun combinations.

I enjoyed the experience of trying the different types of pizza. The staff was fun to chat with as well. I’m really glad we went and would go again. I do have to admit that in my memory the best pizza is the the one my family used to get from the pizza shop near my Grandmas house in New Jersey.
After getting stuffed we pizza we started walking back towards our hotel. It being Rome meant that we passed some cool ruins along the way.
One thing that hasn’t changed since my first trip to Rome in 2009 is that it is a wonderful city to walk around. Lots of interesting old building and ruins along with trees and nature. There are also lots of fun cobblestone streets and piazzas surrounded by historical buildings.
