There was so much good food in Zurich. Some from touristy restaurants and others from local places. The first place we went to was in the old town. We arrived before the hotel check in time so we just checked our bags and headed out exploring. We were both a bit hangry so wanted to find something quickly. We followed Google maps to an area in Old Town that had lots of restaurants and picked a place that caters to tourists called Zeughauskeller.
There Kuah tried a fun beer and we shared the Mayor’s sword. It was beef pounded thin and wrapped around a sword blade, then grilled. It came with rosti and other sides. For a touristy restaurant we found it to be very good. The one thing I didn’t like so much was the rosti. I was actually relieved by this as I wouldn’t be tempted by it throughout the trip. Another great thing about out lunch was that we were not there during prime meal time so the restaurant wasn’t so crowded.
Our waiter had a fun personality and tried making lots of jokes. However, as we were a bit tired, we didn’t get most of them till he had walked away.

One thing we learned before going to Zurizh was that they had a lot of vegetarian restaurants with great reviews. Haus Hitl is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world and got great reviews for it’s food. It had a buffet or you could order off of the menu. Wanting to try a bit of everything we went with the buffet. It was delicious and had a lot of healthy choices. There were also more decadent choices but we chose to mainly stay healthy here knowing we had planned some splurgy meals.
The buffet was done differently than most places I’ve been to. You fill up your plate and then weigh it and are charged by the weight. I really like this idea as you don’t feel you have to eat a lot to get your money’s worth.

I absolutely love a good chicken cordon bleu! I don’t find them often but when I do, mmmm so good. Lucky for me the specialty of Restaurant Haldenback is chicken cordon bleu. Kuah found it online before we went to Zurich and we made reservations to ensure we could enjoy it.
The restaurant was only about a 15 minute walk from our hotel. What we didn’t realize till we got going was that walk was mostly up a steep hill. I guess that was a good thing considering what I would be eating. Of course, the chicken cordon bleu was served with french fries. Kuah took a second stab at a rosti with his meal and had half of my chicken. It really was a HUGE piece.

Another place we made sure to have a reservation at was the Alpenrose. This cute restaurant had a lovely European feel. There weren’t many tables and the people staff were all very friendly and welcoming. This restaurant provided one of my favorite meals. It was a ravioli in a sage butter sauce and it was so delicious. Kuah tried their spaetzle along with veal meatloaf in a mushroom cream sauce.

Of course what would a trip to Switzerland be without some chocolate. I enjoyed some chocolates from a few different shops along our walks. I also, got a piece of cake from a shop by the train station. We were actually lucky to be so close to the train station as it housed a bunch of restaurants, shops and kiosks. It was a fun place to walk around when we didn’t want to be outside. It also had my old friend, Brezelkonig. I first discovered this soft pretzel chain in Vienna but was happy to find it again in Switzerland. I do love a good carb!

All in all we both enjoyed the food in Zurich. One thing I liked was that most dishes came with some sauteed vegetables or a salad. Unlike in America they don’t give you salad dressing or vegetable choices but I always enjoyed what they gave me. Why don’t the vegetables I cook taste as good?
