Our first trip to Rome in 2009 was fantastic. It was Kuah and my first anniversary and our first trip to Europe together. I did a lot of planning and bought skip the line tickets to all of the major attractions and we walked all over the city. I don’t remember the name of the hotel we stayed at but I remember loving it. It had an old fashioned elevator and was a super cute, but small room. Every morning they would bring breakfast pastries to our room to start the day. One day we went to the market and then had a little picnic in our room.
As the economy was struggling at that time tourism was way down. Lines were shorter and it was much easier to get last minute reservations to places people normally have to book months in advance. This lead us to having the best meal at Roscioli. We sat at a little table next to the wall of wine bottles and near the deli counter and ate amazing pasta dishes.
When we decided to visit Rome we knew we wanted to have that meal again. I was able to get reservations for a table in the same section. Sometimes revisiting memories can be a bad idea as they often don’t live up to expectations. Thankfully, in this case the meal may have exceeded even my memories.
First Kuah spotted a great new dish to try. Bresaola is made from the inside lean round of beef. It is aged 2-3 months until it becomes a dark red color. Then is sliced thin like lunch meat. Ours was served with shaved piave stravecchio cheese and a small salad. It was absolutely delicious and is now my favorite way to eat beef. The table next to us saw it on our table and asked us what it was. They ordered it as well and loved it too! Kuah is such a trendsetter.
Our next course replicated our first lunch. I got the cacio e pepe and Kuah got the carbonara. The sauce was delightfully creamy with the tang of pecorino cheese. The pasta had the perfect chewiness that can be tough to achieve. I couldn’t have asked for a better meal. Kuah had the guinea fowl for his final course which was a bit dry, but no one is perfect.

We left full and happy and walked back to our hotel to pack for the next leg of our trip. On the way back we passed this crazy gelato man statue. It made us stop and laugh but not sure it was encouraging us to go into the shop.
