We decided to hike back to Lake Wolfgang one day early. Our accommodations in Postalm were not nice and it was supposed to rain so we thought we’d have more fun at Lake Wolfgang.
We splurged on a great hotel and left early so we would have lots of time to relax. It had a huge bathtub which was perfect for a much needed soak. It also had a beautiful view of the town (and a sliver of the lake) from our balcony.
When we arrived we were way too tired to even go down for lunch. We decided to order to the room and were pleasantly surprised. I got these spectacular spinach dumplings that seemed to be almost all spinach. They had a bit of a nice strong cheese so the taste was delicious. Now I just have to find the recipe! Kuah got a smoked fish which he enjoyed, but my dumplings were defiantly the star.
One of the reasons that we decided to leave our hike early was to try a restaurant Kuah had found out about called D’Speis. This ended up being one of my favorite meals in Austria. It started with a strawberry goat cheese gazpacho. This was too tomatoey for me but it was followed one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. It had a great char on the ends and was perfectly salted. Yummy!
They served the steak with a variety of dipping sauces but it was so delicious on it’s own that they weren’t needed. I got a salad to go with my steak and I must say I’ve been loving the salad dressings in Austria. They usually don’t give you a choice but that’s fine with me as I like the ones they choose for me. They mostly tend to be some type of vinaigrette, although there are also some yogurt dressings.
I finished off my dinner with a delicious chocolate dessert. On the whole I have not been loving the chocolate desserts in Austria but this one was wonderful! The cake wasn’t dry and the topping made it just sweet enough. Thankfully we had a walk back to the hotel afterwards.
All that was just in the afternoon on the day we hiked back. We still had a full day to enjoy the next day. We slept in and then went for a walk around the town. Next we decided to take a boat ride over to Saint Gilgen to see another little town. We sat on the top deck of the boat. Thankfully, the lake was pretty still so I didn’t get seasick. What I did get was a chance to see some amazing scenery.
The next town was cute but seemed to be just a smaller version of St. Wolfgang. We stopped for lunch and had a delicious garlic soup and an ok spinach dumpling. This spinach dumpling had much more bread in it than the one at the hotel, it was really more of a bread dumpling with some spinach. After the one at the hotel the day before this one was a bit of a disappointment. Then we decided to walk back to our hotel. In total we walked about 8 miles including wandering around the towns.
