This trip Kuah and are are testing out a few pizza places to see which is the best. My favorite in the past has been Bella Pizza. We thought we’d try a few others and see how they compare. All of them were solid choices but depending on the type of pizza you enjoy your favorite may be different than mine. One thing to note is that most of these restaurants offer options other than pizza, but in this blog I’m just concentrating on the pizza.
We tried this place when we were hungry and nearby. It had a good rating online so we decided it would be a fun way to start our pizza testing. They offer a wide variety of toppings, some familiar and some more creative. Kuah and I decided to split a large pizza and get it split 2 ways. When I say large pizza, don’t think American sizes. Their small is designed for 1 person and large for 2 people.
Before going further I must admit that both Kuah and I enjoy a good Hawaiian pizza. Some people are pineapple snobs and to them I say, Don’t yuck my yum. I guess you now realize that half of the pizza was a Hawaiian pizza. The other half was pepperoni.
The quality of the toppings were very good. The pepperoni was real pepperoni and had a nice beef flavor. In the past I had found that many restaurants here say pepperoni but then use salami. So I was especially excited to have the pepperoni. It also had a chili oil on it that added to the spiciness. The ham on the Hawaiian side was a good quality lean ham. I found the sauce to be a bit bland but my husband enjoyed it. The crust was light and airy. I prefer a chewy crust, and my husband likes a crispy crust. But I know there are lots of pizza lovers out there that go for the light airy crust. If that’s you this would be a great place to try.
Overall, it was an enjoyable meal. It cost about $33 for a half and half pizza. It is located in a small 2 level shopping plaza that is next to a hawker center. Unlike the hawker center, the places here a offer their own seating. We were lucky to get a table with 2 chairs as most of the tables have stools. There is AC and the service was great.
Kuah and I also decided it would be fun to try Sonny’s Pizza since they sell it by the slice. It’s website says it is a throwback to a neighborhood pizza joint similar to those in New York. In addition to pizza by the slice they also offer 12″ and 18″ pies. They offer classic toppings and some geared towards Asian flavors like rendang or seafood laksa.
Walking in the place has a familiar atmosphere with a variety of pizza options you can get a slice from. They have some casual seating inside and outside. We sat outside because I’m a curmudgeon and don’t like loud music, which was playing inside. Kuah ordered a slice of pepperoni and I got a plain slice. This pizza I enjoyed more than Kuah. Mine had a nice garlicky flavor to it. I wasn’t impressed by the pepperoni on Kuah’s slice and would definitely go for the cheese.
Il Clay Supper Club
I know this doesn’t sound like a place to get pizza, but they say they are a place where Neapolitan pizza and Mediterranean cuisine collide. And their chef has lots of pizza awards. Kuah and I just happened by it when we were walking home from Sonny’s and decided to try it another day. Their reviews all rave about their pizza but everyone’s pizza taste is different so you can’t be sure just from reading the reviews. To be honest there was a part of me that thought about just going to Bella Pizza, which I know is good but since I’m writing this blog I thought I should give it a try.
So glad that we did decide to give it a try. Kuah and I shared a large (12″) margarita pizza. The crust was perfectly chewy and the sauce had a great flavor. My only complaint was the cheese. It was a good cheese but there just wasn’t enough of it for me. However, that did make it healthier. It was Kuah’s favorite pizza so far, but we still have a few places to go.
The ambiance of the restaurant was fun. We had it all to ourselves as its more of a dinner place. The red/pink lamps and lights slowly change color together which I liked. It was fun to eat pizza in such a fancy atmosphere.
This outlet is from the famed Brooklyn pizza house Roberta’s Pizza. I checked with my friend who lives in Brooklyn and she had heard of it. It serves wood-fired Neopolitan-style pizzas.
Located in the Marina Bay shopping mall, it is small but has a cute atmosphere. There is no reservation system so if you go at a busy time expect to wait in line. They do have a take away special, but unfortunately no pizza by the slice. Depending on your toppings the pizza’s are around $30 each.
Kuah and I started off sharing the Famous Original which had tomato, mozarella, parmigiano, caciocavallo, oregano and chili. Kuah really liked the flavor of this one but I didn’t. So we ordered another margarita pizza for me. The size is perfect for sharing a pizza and a salad or side. We both enjoyed our pizzas.
- Margherita
- Famous Origninal
This has been my favorite pizza in Singapore. We first tried it at it’s sister restaurant Bella Pasta. I loved the flavor of it’s sauce, and it’s chewy crust. The first time we had it delivered it was done by someone who didn’t really understand pizza. They had carried the box sideways and it became one big pile of craziness. I wish I had thought to take a picture. But even then the flavor was really good. So this time I’m seeing how it measures up to a few other places.
Feeling a bit in need of pizza therapy one day I got a large (similar to a US medium) margarita pie delivered to share with Kuah. It is still a great pizza. Of all the pizzas this one has the perfect amount and type of cheese. It also has the chewy crust I love. Although the sauce is flavorful I would have to admit that the Il Clay Supper Club sauce is a bit more flavorful. It may also be that because that pizza has less cheese the sauce stands out more. I was super happy with my Bella pizza and am happy they have continued to provide a delicious option for pizza in Singapore.
So which is our favorite? Overall Bella Pizza is still my favorite. However, if I can get a bit more cheese on the Il Clay Supper Club pizza that would overtake it. Kuah’s favorite is Roberta’s. I’d be happy to visit any of them again.
