After reading through the blogs Kuah quickly pointed out that I had not includes our favorite foods from our trip to Austria. I thought I had but alas, looking back through I saw they were missing. So, I’m adding this blog in now even though it’ll be torture to look at all these delicious foods and not be able to eat them!
Although we went to some restaurants based on recommendations or guide books or reviews, this one we found totally by accident. We had gone for a long walk and needed to take a break and enjoy a cold drink. We walked past a few places and almost stopped but none of them seemed like the right place to just enjoy a drink. By the time we were walking past Schnitzel Konig we were not only desperate for a cold drink we also decided we could share a small snack.
There are many places serving schnitzel in Vienna but this restaurant offers Sesame Schnitzel, which we hadn’t seen before. It’s strange that a few small seeds can make a big difference but they really do. We found that we absolutely loved sitting on the patio and enjoying sesame schnitzel. We started off sharing a plate but went back many more times. Each time we went back we ordered our own portions wanting more of the good stuff.
Another place we discovered by accident was the Halis Borek GmbH. This was located in a large outdoor market. We came across the market while wandering through the city on afternoon. We started down the street excited but were soon disappointed that most of the items were flea market type items or foods to bring home to cook. We almost turned off before going through the second section.
Thankfully we kept going as we found this cart making the most delicious treat, gozleme. It has a thin dough on the outside, and is filled with tangy cheese and spinach. It was served super hot and wrapped in tin foil. This made it hard to hold but it was worth the discomfort.

There was always a line, even on days when the market wasn’t crowded. It was run by a couple of women that were making everything fresh by hand.
Our very first night in Vienna we discovered a gem, thanks to our AirB&B host. We were too tired to explore so looked at a guide he had provided and picked a restaurant close to us. We didn’t realize how lucky we were to walk in and get a table. This restaurant quickly became one of our favorites. They used fresh ingredients to make simple but flavorful dishes. Kuah’s favorite dish was a mushroom gulasch. We both enjoyed their pumpkin soup. Later we discovered that there is a special pumpkin seed oil made in Austria that adds a richness to the dish.
Mushroom Gulasch Mom with Gulasch Pumpkin Soup
We enjoyed the Glacis Beisl so much that we event took my Mom there. At the end of the trip she said the mushroom gulasch was her favorite dish. We sat outside in the garden almost every time. It was lovely except for the time I ordered fish. Unfortunately, the bees thought the fish was as delicious as I did and they swarmed my food.
Room service can be great when you’re feeling lazy but it usually doesn’t end up being a gourmet experience. After a day of hiking Kuah and I ended up at the Weissen Rossl in Wolfgangsee to relax, clean off and warm up. First order of business was to eat. Feeling lazy we decide to order room service rather than go out. I ordered a spinach dumpling with the idea of eating my veggies. Well, if this were the way all veggies tasted I’d become a vegetarian. They were absolutely amazing. They had packed with spinach with a tangy cheese mixed throughout. The fresh sage and brown butter sauce provided extra flavor and richness.

I tried ordering them at other restaurants but was disappointed to find that often, they were mostly bread with very little spinach. I’m still searching for a recipe to recreate them.
