Our first outing was to the small town of Orvieto which is a medieval town a little over an hour’s drive from our villa. The drive was beautiful so it went by quickly. Once we arrived at the parking lot we were able to take a funicular up to the town. It was Mom’s first time on a funicular. It wasn’t busy so we were able to stand at the front and enjoy the ride.
The top of the funicular ride drops you off at the bottom of the town. From here we could either take a bus to the top or walk up. We decided to walk up. The great part of this was that there were so many fun stalls lining the beginning of the road and lots of cute shops in the buildings as we reached to top. In hindsight it would’ve been better to take the bus up and then walk down. The roads on the mountain town were steeper than expected.

Mom and I used our hiking poles as we walked to the top. This was helpful for my plantar fasciitis and supporting my Mom as she walked. The cute streets had a good amount of people on them but were not too crowded to enjoy. Once we got to the top we headed to a restaurant we had heard about. In fact almost everything I read about Orvieto talks about this restaurant. From the town’s website to tourist and local blogs. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up being to our taste.
I started with a vegetable plate that had beans, potatoes, eggplant, greens, peppers, zucchini and cauliflower. While I was happy to have something healthy it was fairly flavorless. Kuah started with a carbonara with truffles and Mom had a soup. From there Kuah had a wild boar dish and some chicory. Mom and I got a tenderloin with truffles. Unfortunately, although they said it was cooked medium it was really rare. Also it was not just truffles on top but other mushrooms as well. While this is more of a personal taste, it made it difficult for me to eat.
The nice thing about the restaurant was that the staff was really nice. We also got this great corner table where we could put our backpack and hiking poles up against the wall and out of the way while we ate. And of course it had the all important clean bathroom.
After lunch we walked around the town a bit and did some souvenir shopping. We went into the cathedral and then decided to walk back down to the funicular. As it was our first day out together we didn’t want it to be too tiring. On the way down, while mom took a short rest on the bench Kuah and I got to see a beautiful view of the nearby scenery. All in all it was a fun first day out together.
