We booked a cheap hotel for our first few nights in Rome. It was a part of floor in a building that had been broken down into several hotel rooms. The room we booked had a small table at the entrance of our room that could be used for work. Then to the right was a small room with a sofa and to the left a small room with our bed. Connecting the room was a bathroom. At night there was the sound of cats in heat and other loud noises. Most nights I was tired enough to sleep through some of it but I wasn’t sad to leave that hotel.
The main issue was that they made the unfortunate decision to put the shower in the bedroom. Not only is it a bit strange to take a shower in the bedroom but there was not proper ventilation for the shower. This led to the window next to the shower being surrounded by black mold. We tried not to spend too much time in the room as it had a mold problem and told them about it as we left. I doubt that they did anything about it though. I’m not sure how they missed seeing all the mold as it built up.
It wasn’t all bad though. It came with breakfast on the roof terrace. It wasn’t fancy but started me out healthy with yogurt, fruit and green tea. Kuah had eggs, bacon, toast and fruit depending on the day. The one cold morning I was worried about freezing on the terrace I was relived to find that they had enclosed the area and put on a heater. We were also able to check in early which saved us from having to store our luggage.
The hotel was in the Trastevere area of Rome which ended up being convenient for us. We could walk down to an area with lots of shops and restaurants. We didn’t have the time to explore it as much as we wanted as I was limited in the walking I could do but I liked what we did see.
We made a mistake when we made our first hotel reservation which left us with 1 extra night in Rome before we had to pick up Mom. Thankfully we noticed this before the start of the trip. We ended up choosing to spend 1 night at La Posta Vecchia. This is a seaside villa that was once owned by John Paul Getty. It was a welcome change from our first hotel.
We stayed in a tower room on the top floor. It had little windows that looked out onto the sea. Every time I looked out I felt like I was looking at a painting. I needed to rest my foot for the day so it was the perfect place to relax and lounge the day away in plush comfort.
They had an indoor pool which we enjoyed in the afternoon. It was heated and we were the only ones it. From the pool we could look out at the gardens or the balcony. It was fun to have the whole pool room to ourselves.

We ate dinner in their restaurant. Kuah had the Gardino set meal of vegetable dishes. The first course was fava beans and chicory with bread meatballs. This was followed by a caponata and then ricotta tortelli with summer vegetables. It ended with a dish made with all artichokes. I had lobster in a saffron sauce with wild mustard leaves. It was the one late dinner we ate but with it being light it didn’t effect our sleep or give Kuah heartburn.

After dinner we first went outside to see the ocean. Then we went to the basement to see the Roman museum. The villa was built over some Roman ruins that had been preserved. Here you could see some of the floor tiling, walls and other items from early Roman times.
The room came with breakfast but we had to leave before it started to pick up Mom. So they kindly put together a breakfast of fresh fruits, tea, cappuccino, breads and yogurt for us. The level of service at the hotel was wonderful.
In a way I felt like I had been transported back in time as much of the decor was the the way it had been when it was owned by Getty. Except I could wear pants 🙂
