Kuah did a lot of driving to get us to Bologna. The day started out in Umbria. We got up early and loaded up the car to drive Mom to the airport. It was about a 2.5 hour drive to Rome. The drive through Umbria was tough as it was really foggy that morning. The good thing about leaving early was that we beat all of the traffic.
Once we got my Mom settled on her plan we had a 4.5 hour drive to Bologna. The most fun thing on the drive were the tunnels. We couldn’t believe how long they were. We were very thankful for them as the drive would’ve been so much longer if we had to drive around all of the mountains.
We arrived in time for a late lunch so we decided to go to downtown Bologna for lunch. This ended up being a bit stressful as we were tired and had to be careful about not driving in the historic zone. I read a sign wrong and we ended up in that section so spent the next 45 minutes running around like crazy trying to get a pass for the historic downtown before we got fined.
Once that was settled we went to eat at Il Passatello di Bologna for lunch. Kuah had the Passatelli which is a specialty of Bologna. It is a pasta formed of bread crumbs eggs and grated cheese. His was served with a meat sauce. I went for a veal in a citrus sauce and a side of grilled vegetables.

While locals love Passatelli it wasn’t our favorite dish. After trying a bite of his I was happy I’d made a healthier decision. The veal and grilled veggies were a perfect healthy but tasty choice for me. We sat at a little outdoor table and enjoyed the mild temperature.
From there we walked around Bologna a bit and then ran into a supermarket to pick up some food for dinner. In Umbria we had often eaten premade meats and veggies from the supermarket. Unfortunately what we bought in the Bologna store was very disappointing. Even the strawberries were flavorless. We ended up mostly eating some tomato flavored potato chips we had picked up in a rest stop.
Our Airbnb ended up being a bit further away from the city than I had thought it was. It was really cute and decorated in mid century decor. It had beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valley. Unfortunately, the window dressings made it difficult to see. Kuah took them down halfway through our trip and then were were able to enjoy it more. I believe many people go outside to relax but the bugs kept me indoors.
Our host was super nice and very helpful. He gave us some great recommendations and even left a homemade cake for the first night.
