Over the years as Kuah and I have changed so have our travels. One of the big changes is that we go to bed early. Kuah doesn’t often eat dinner, and I usually eat it late afternoon. While this schedule is perfect for my morning walks it did mean that we might miss out on a few of Budapest’s attractions. Fortunately, we were able to get in the 2 nighttime attractions I was worried about missing.
The Ruin Bars are located in the old Jewish Quarter of Budapest. After World War II many of the buildings in this quarter had been left in ruins. They were left that way until the early 2000’s. It began as a small experiment to set up a bar in an abandoned building and offer affordable drinks. It has since become an iconic part of Budapest.
I doubted that I would see this area as I don’t usually stay up late enough to go to bars anymore. However, while researching markets I learned that there is a Sunday farmer’s market held in the ruin bars. So Kuah and I went and had a great time. It was much smaller than we had thought but we ended up finding some great rye bread, jam and garlic honey mustard. Then Kuah made me scrambled eggs with dill the next morning to have with the rye bread. Lucky me!

Another thing I was really hoping to experience in Budapest was live Gyps music. Unfortunately, I could only find night performances of it. I had pretty much given up hope of getting this experience when I got super duper lucky. The weekend before we left there was a small festival outside our building. And it turned out that one of the performances was by a Gypsy band.
We were lucky enough to be staying at an apartment with a balcony overlooking the stage. So while I was working Friday evening Kuah shouted to me to let me know there was a gypsy band playing. We then sat on the balcony and enjoyed the performance.

Thankfully the performances ended by 9:30 so I was still able to get to bed early. There were other bands playing the next day as well but I liked the Gypsy band the best. I did enjoy opening the doors to the balcony to listen to the live music while I relaxed.
