One day while Kuah and I were walking around Plaza Sinapura and looking for somewhere fun to eat we decided to try Nanjing Impressions. It’s a bit kitchy so we were a little worried about the food but figured why not give it a go.
It is designed to look like an old Chinese tea house. Their staff wear traditional clothes and they even have live traditional music performances.
I love all the hanging lanterns. While the tables match the decor I can say that sitting on the wooden benches is not fun for long periods of time. Maybe that’s their key to quick table turnover.
The food is a bit hit an miss. Some of our favorites were good enough to get us back and we event brought Mom to try it out.
We really liked the baby lotus root shoots which are served in a vinegar sauce with just a bit of heat. I also loved the braised beancurd puff. It’s in a sugary soy sauce and ended up being the perfect compliment to the spicy fish in pickled cabbage broth. On the sweet side we also tried the plum glazed peanuts and traditional brown sugar rice cakes.
Of course life isn’t all about sweet. Needing more savory to balance it out we had sesame scented bean curd julienne and Nanjang Noodles in Light Soy Sauce Broth which I think was Mom’s favorite.

All in all it was a fun experience with a variety of yummy dishes and we’ll probably go back again the next time we’re here. I expect the restaurant will still be here because it fills up fast in prime time. That’s why we usually try to eat a bit early. It was empty when we arrived but full by the time we left.
