I’ve covered a lot of food and restaurants but there’s still more!!! Let’s start with desserts. Of course you really should always start with desserts. Ice cream and gelato in Vienna is delicious. Especially when you’re sweating because it’s in the 90’s. You can get just a plain chocolate cone or go hog wild and get a waffle cone with ice cream and loads of toppings. There were a few frozen yogurt places but they were usually empty.
I wrote about Cafe Mozart before. Of course I couldn’t just have one dessert there. Before we left I made sure to stop again and enjoy the Mozarts Symphonie, which was a lot of fun to break into.
I also found a few french cafe’s that had divine desserts. One of them made a pistacio cake that was amazing. It was so soft, moist with just a bit of chew. The delicate pistachio flavor wasn’t overpowering. I really enjoyed it. Another french cafe had a chocolate cake that was incredibly rich and satisfying.
Not all of the desserts worked out. The last 2 pictures are some Austrian dishes that just didn’t hit the spot. Several of them were made with poppyseed. I’m not sure if it’s my American taste buds but for me they weren’t worth the calories.
Now that we’ve covered desserts it’s time to look at savory food. There are some wonderful restaurants and dishes in Vienna. Kuah was really excited to try the stuffed cabbage in Vienna. We found that there were not actually that many stuffed cabbage restaurants in Vienna. We did find this wonderful place called Zur Herknerin which was only open for dinner and required reservations. We had another delicious meal. Kuah got the stuffed cabbage and I got to have some spinach dumplings again.
We did not find many authentic Asian restaurants in Vienna. There are a lot of fried rice and noodle stands but they really aren’t good at all. We did go to a Tibetan restaurant, Yak Und Yeti, that had an all you can eat dumpling restaurant once a week. The dumplings came with 3 different dipping sauces and you could get a variety of meat or vegetarian fillings. If we lived in Vienna we would definitely frequent this restaurant.
Before going to Vienna I read a fun book about the Sacher Hotel. So I was really excited to see it. Turns out that their restaurants all get really positive reviews so we made a reservation for lunch one day at Restaurant Rote Bar. It was a wonderful experience. The staff was friendly, the decor was magical and we had a relaxing meal. I also tried a new wine, which is a dessert wine that I liked that is special to Austria. I didn’t take a picture of the wine but got the waiter to write down the name for my next visit.
Speak of drinks Kuah and I tried a special wine, Sturm, that is only available once a year in Austria and Germany. Thankfully that time is the end of September till mid-October so we were able to enjoy it.
It is only available for a short period of time due to it’s rapid fermentation which could cause the bottle to explode if corked. It is a young wine fermented from freshly pressed grape juice. It has a bright bubbly flavor.
