Lake Hayes Trail & Ayrburn Winery

Posted on April 19, 2025 by Karen KuahApril 30, 2025

With my recent back and not so recent foot injuries we’ve been gradually working back into longer walks. We found that the Lake Hayes Trail was the perfect place for this. It is 8 km, about 5 miles long. It has an elevation gain of about 347 ft. There is a mix of flat sections along with somewhat steep inclines and declines. This gave me a nice variation.

Along the trail there are many benches to sit and enjoy the lake views. I started out taking lots of 10 minute sit and stretch breaks. Then I moved to 5 minute sit and stretch breaks and finally to walks with just stretch breaks. I also slowly worked on increasing my pace. Kuah was patient and supportive of my slower pace and frequent breaks.

We decided that this would be a better lake to live on than the larger one where downtown is. Although you can’t walk to shops the trail is really pretty. You can hike or bike around the trail. You can also keep a kayak there and enjoy going out on the water without having to worry about motor boats.

After one of our walks Kuah found a great place, Ayrburn Winery, to have dinner at. They have an ice cream shop and 3 different restaurants there. After checking them out we opted to go to the Woolshed because it offered good protein and vegetable options. Surprisingly, we’ve been finding it a bit tough to find a lot of vegetables at the restaurants.

The Woolshed was full when we got there but they said they could seat us in 20 mins. So we went to the bar where Kuah enjoyed a beer and I had a mocktail. When it was time be be seated we were taken outside and seated not far from a fireplace with a great view of the river.

The food took a long time to come out. We were both starting to get hangy as we had already done our walk and waited in the bar for a while. Thankfully we could at least enjoy the scenery while we waited.

We each ordered steak and then shared 2 vegetable dishes. The first was Roasted Carrot, Sunflower Seed Tahini, Caramelised Yoghurt, Sumac, Pomegranate, Rocket. This was a fun dish and we have found the carrots here to be really good. The second was Trio Of Beetroot, Whipped Goat Cheese, Candied Pistachio Crumb, Cress. Kuah let me eat the golden beats and he ate the red ones. It was also really good, but I like the carrots the best. It was an enjoyable meal.
