Let me just start off by saying I’m loving all these cherry things that they have here. It started with sour cherry juice on the plane. It’s supposed to make you sleep better. I got a good sleep so maybe it worked? Or maybe it was the Z quill ultra I took. I’ll have to test out cherry juice again in the future.
After we got settled into our airbnb we went for a walk to stretch our legs and get some lunch. On the menu Kuah spotted a sour cherry beer. We shared a glass and it was a perfect balance of flavors. We may have to look for some to drink on our balcony in the evenings.
After our lunch we continued to walk and hit the old town/tourist area. I love walking around and looking at all the shops and architecture. I realize it’s a tourist trap but I’m a tourist and it’s fun! While walking there we came across a pastry shop that had a cherry and poppy seed pastry. Once again, I wasn’t let down. The crust was crispy and the filling was both sweet and tart.

After walking more we decided to start walking towards home. One the way we passed Pelmenyizde and saw people exiting with takeout containers full of little dumplings. We decided to go in and ended up having pelmenyi. We chose cheese pelmenyi which came with sour cream, pepper and fresh dill on top. They were absolutely amazing. Kuah was sorry the we shared an order instead of him having a full order to himself. He thought the dumpling skins on them was the best he’s ever had.
As we continued our walk home we got to a street where the police were blocking people from crossing the street. While we waiting a few police cars went by and a van with what looked to be a security camera on top. Eventually a lot of large black SUVs drove through surrounding a small white Fiat 500. Kuah looked into the Fiat and saw it was the pope. He then checked the news and confirmed the pope was in Budapest. I was too busy looking at the black cars so I didn’t see him. Total walking distance on Sunday was 9.65 miles, although some of that walking was done in the airport.
Monday was our first full day in Budapest and it happened to be Labor Day here so there were a few festivals for us to check out. But before that I went on a morning walk to get Kuah a cappuccino. There are several coffee spots near our house but due to the holiday they were closed. I enjoyed the extra walk as the weather was beautiful. It’s been in the 60s all day. And I was finally successful in finding an open California Coffee. Never heard of them before so not sure if it’s just a chain in Hungary or if its from California.
After Kuah enjoyed a leisurely cappuccino we headed out to the first labor day festival. This one was the smaller of the 2 and we didn’t stay long. They mostly had activities for children and food stalls. All of the food stall food looked to be crazy unhealthy but no quite delicious enough try.
We then continued our walk to the larger festival. This one was in City Park (Varosliget). When we arrived we couldn’t believe how huge the park was. In fact its 302 acres. Kuah was pointing out all the cool stuff on the massive playground that Mira would love. There was a running trail, lots of wide walking paths and plenty of grass for picnics as well. The fair here had a lot of rides for kids and many more food stalls. We tried a berry lemonade and a fried twister potato. Neither were very good so they both ended up in the garbage.

As we hadn’t had anything for lunch yet we decided to see what was available nearby. We ended up finding a great Hungarian restaurant, Paprika Vendeglo and managed to get seated right away. By the time we left there was a long line. The atmosphere inside was really cute with wooden tables and chairs along with old fashioned decorations.
Kuah had a beef steak with goose liver, mushrooms, rice and croquettes. The sauce the beef was in was rich and comforting. It really elevated the beef. I had almond crusted turkey breast with rice and grilled peaches. Strangely enough, the rice was amazing. I was expecting just a plain white rice but it was super flavorful. The menu was full of interesting options so I hope we go back again.

After lunch we walked back home. The architecture here is amazing and makes walking fun. I’ll be sure to get some pics for a future blog. On the way home we stopped and I got a scoop of chocolate raspberry ice cream. Once we were near home Kuah and I split up and I went on an adventure to find him a cappuccino. In total I walked 10.96 miles.
