Kuah and I have enjoyed some amazing meals in Vienna. We’ve found some favorite restaurants that we repeatedly visit but also make sure to visit new ones. I can’t honestly say that every meal is amazing but I can say I haven’t had a bad meal yet.
On our first morning we woke up and walked up Mariahilfer Strasse and stopped at the first restaurant we came across that looked good. Kuah ordered the schnitzel and I got a grilled chicken salad. I’m not a huge fan of breakfast food so I was happy we could order off the lunch menu.
Kuah thought his schnitzel was really good – but as we had more schnitzel through the trip he realized it’s just an average schnitzel. I discovered that eat is easy to eat healthy in Vienna. They have wonderful grilled chicken breast dishes, amazing grilled fish and absolutely delicious grilled shrimp.
Right before I left for Vienna I got to pick a new Kindle First book. They had one that took place in Vienna and was all about the Sacher hotel. I was happy to read it on the plane and learn about some of the history in Vienna.
We walked past the Sacher hotel several times and there was always a big line of people waiting to get in and try the Sacher torte. Then one time we walked by and there was no line. We were able to walk in and grab a table with no wait.
We ordered our Sacher torte to share. Although Kuah mostly drank his Viennese iced coffee, which is almost like a sundae. I loved the apricot layer in the cake but wasn’t really impressed by the chocolate. There were supposed to be several types with different flavors but I couldn’t really taste them. It was fun to try but I don’t feel the need to go back for more.
Emperor Franz Joseph’s favorite meal was Tafelspitz, a boiled beef dish. So Kuah and I decided to go to Plachutta to try the tafelspitz. Kuah found the broth to be a bit salty but the meat to have a good flavor.
I’m not the biggest fan of beef so I decided to order a shrimp dish. I didn’t expect it to be very good as ordering a shrimp dish in a beef restaurant is not usually the best idea. I was pleasantly surprised by a plate full of large succulent shrimp. In fact, I think I enjoyed my shrimp more than Kuah enjoyed his tafelspitz.
We picked our airbandb location as it was near the Nascht Market. Reading about it before coming to Vienna made us think it would be a place we often visited for a variety for fresh, delicious food. However, it turned out that most of the vendors at the Nascht Market sell middle eastern food. I like middle eastern food but was really disappointed in the lack of variety.
Thankfully, even though the market was a disappointment Kuah and I love the area we are staying it. It’s full of great shops, has street performers and is only a mile walk to Old Town. Also, my luck with food continued in our visit to Nascht market and I ended up with this amazing salad with huge grilled shrimp.
Kuah and I stumbled across Zur Bohmischen Kuchl in one of our long walks. We really enjoyed it and have been back a second time. It has more home cooking food than fancy restaurant food.
They have the most delightful cabbage dish that is fresher than sauerkraut but with the same type of flavor. They also have dumplings that are similar to those my grandma made. In fact of all the dumplings I’ve sampled in Vienna these are the closest to the ones my grandma made.
Another thing I like about this restaurant is all of the garlic they use. I am a garlic lover and both times I was there I was able to get different pork with garlic dishes. One was a schnitzel and another was pan fried. The potato pancake with garlic was a treat as well.
Eis, or ice cream is everywhere in Vienna. There are many forms including gelato, frozen yogurt, sorbet and even vegan ice cream. The frozen yogurt places are usually pretty quiet in comparison to the other spots.
I’ve had a few different cones along the way. I’ve also been walking 10 miles a day to help balance all of this amazing food!
During one of our walks Kuah and I came across an ice cream shop that was geared towards locals. It’s one of the few places we’ve been that didn’t have English menus or waitstaff that spoke English.
We ordered a sample plate that had some interesting looking ice creams. It turned out that one was a mocha ice cream and another had crunchy sweet pieces all around it. They look like marshmallows but are more like crispy cereal pieces.
The second one had poppyseed outside with raspberry in the middle and another with apricot in the middle. I was surprised that I really enjoyed the poppyseed on the outside.
