I started the day with the Japanese breakfast at the hotel. It came with salmon, tofu, rice, miso soup, green veg, burdok and pickled plum. There was also some fish or vegetable cakes. It seemed to be fairly healthy but wasn’t really delicious. Kuah was on a Benedict kick so he stuck with that. As he said they’re a pain to make so great to eat out.
Sunday was our day to visit Dotonbori. This area is popular with both locals and tourists. It has covered shopping streets and several large department stores. It was super crowded on the main streets but side streets gave a bit of breathing room. Dotonbori has loads of food from snacks to meals, sweet and savory, street stands and restaurants you can find it all. Additionally there are several department stores and lots of shops.
Kuah had read about a kitsune udon place in in Dontonbori so we headed there first. Since kitsune udon was invented in Osaka, we definitely wanted to try it here. The udon shop was next to a curry shop that had a line. When the curry shop opened and the udon shop didn’t we decided to try some curry. It was a small restaurant with one long corner to sit on. They had 2 big pots of curry and were just making plates of rice and then covering it with curry. It ended up being too spicy for me but Kuah loved it. The picked cabbage was yummy for me.
By the time we came out of the curry shop the udon place had a line so we joined it and had a small bowl of udon. The udon itself had a good chew but was nothing special. The broth however was amazing. It had a kick of yuzu that really balanced the sweetness of the tofu.
We were properly stuffed by this point and needed to do some walking. So we joined the crowds and wandered the streets. We were on a mission to find Kuah new plane earbuds so we headed to an electronics store. After a while I started to feel a bit unwell so we headed to one of the department stores. We hoped to find a coffee shop where we could sit and relax a bit.
We got lucky and found a bookshop with a few tables where I could get a ginger ale and relax. I felt a bit better after but not great so we decided to call it a day. We went to the basement of the grocery store for Kuah to get some food before heading out. He got some mackerel sushi and croquettes. I got some chocolate macrons for another day.
Then we headed back to our nice comfy hotel. We were lucky that our hotel had a nice table for Kuah to enjoy his snack. He really liked the corn croquette. I thought the macron was really good if you just thought of it as a chocolate treat. However, as a macron it wasn’t so good.
In total we walked 6 miles.
