Miles Walked: 16
Restaurants Visited: Rendezvous Restaurant, Yuu Xiang Dam, Fika, Geylang Claypot Rice
This weekend we walked in one big circle. We started by heading down the riverwalk to Clarke Quay for dinner. Here is a picture we took along the way to to Clark Quay. It’s one of the few ones with the sunshine still out. See I’m not a vampire!
The other picture is from after dinner in the same area. There is a boat from the boat tours that they do here. Of, course with my motion sickness I’ve never gone on one.
Along the way we couldn’t think or where we wanted to eat. We passed Italian, Japanese, Thai, Seafood, Mexican and many other types or restaurants. But none of them really jumped out.
Then I remembered that we weren’t far from the Rendezvous restaurant which serves nasi padang. Nasi padang originates from Indonesia and it has many rich spicy sauces. Sooo delicious. We got some chicken rendang, octopus, curry vegetables and fried potato. I used to have to eat the potato to cool my mouth down. Now that I’ve gotten used to the spicier food I didn’t need it at all.
Over dinner Kuah told me how in a recent cooking competition a contestant was sent home by a judge because the skin on his chicken rendang wasn’t crispy. The thing is, rendang skin isn’t supposed to be crispy. Some enterprising restaurants have started to make it crispy as another option. I prefer it non crispy because then I just peel the skin off and am not tempted to eat all that extra fat.
Notice the lovely pink headband in I’m wearing in the picture above. I wear a headband most times that I walk because of the high humidity. Without the headband I end up dripping sweat into my eyes all night long. Unfortunately, once I put it on my hair looks silly when I take it off, so I’m stuck with it all night.
As we continued from Clark Quay to Bugis we came across several fun streets with lots or restaurants and shops open. One street seemed to be dedicated to hot pot restaurants. There were quite a few hostels around this area so I think they catered to budget tourists. But the area had a great atmosphere.
Bugis has a lot of interesting restaurants. I rarely think to go there to eat but should do it more often. As we were walking we came across Fika. We hadn’t planned on eating but saw they had chilled blueberry soup on the menu. Well, who could resist all the antioxidants in blueberry soup. It was really delicious and refreshing.
After our delicious soup we heading out and bumped into this coffee shop. I thought the sign was pretty funny, but it certainly didn’t inspire me to go there.
From Bugis we headed towards Geyalng. We passed by a pond and stopped to snap these pics of the Aquatic center. The view from the lake was so pretty. This week you’ll see a lot of pictures with the lights reflecting on the water. I was really enjoying it. I guess that’s what happens when you walk at night in a city surrounded by water.
When Kuah was taking the picture there was a couple sitting together right by the pond. He had his arm around her and I thought, isn’t that so sweet. It’s nice to come across moments of happiness as we take our walks. Of course, no picture of that as it wasn’t my moment to share.
When we got to Geylang things got really crowded. Kuah and I are fast walkers and it can be really annoying to get stuck behind slow walkers. We zip in and out of people and try to keep our hear rates up.
Speaking of annoying, Kuah and I have really come to dislike the bikes and electric stand up scooters. They all use the sidewalk which wouldn’t be a problem except in many places the sidewalk is not large enough for both pedestrians and people on wheels. They always believe that we should stop and move off the path to let them by. If there were only a few it wouldn’t be an issue but in many areas there is bike after bike, scooter after scooter. There are a few places where they get their own path which makes everyone happier. But in some areas there just isn’t room to build them their own path.
To get over my annoyance with this I stopped for a chocolate pancake. This one was super because it had a great combination of crispy sides, soft middle, and gooey chocolate. Of course, any dessert with chocolate always has a good chance of winning my heart. You can also get them made with cheese, coconut, peanuts or red beans. Maybe next time I’ll see if they can combine the peanut and chocolate!
At this point we continued on with the intention of heading towards East Coast Park. But before we got to far we ran into Gaylang Claypot Rice. Kuah and I had been meaning to try this restaurant for a while but it’s not in a convenient location for us, and there is usually a long line. But tonight there was not line and we were right there!!!
We ordered the claypot rice which takes 30 minutes to make, so our feet got a nice long rest. One of the things that makes claypot rice special is that the rice around the edges of the claypot get’s crispy. So once you mix it there are soft and cripy textures together. Ours had chicken, Chinese sausage, and mushrooms.
We found out that claypot rice is not one of our favorite dishes. So, now that we made it to that restaurant we can check that dish off our list and probably won’t be eating it again. One thing I did love about this restaurant was all of there chili sauces. Some were spicier, some more garlicky than others.
Stuffed like Thanksgiving Turkeys we continued the rest of our walk without need to eat more. We had planned to stop for roti paratha in East Coast but decided to just continue towards home. This took us to the Gardens by the Bay. I love going by Gardens by the Bay in our night walks as they have a clean bathrooms that are open to the public. Having a bladder the size of a pea makes me really partial to places with clean accessible bathrooms.
Now back to the lights reflected on the water. Here we saw the Singapore Flyer from a different vantage point than normal. The lights reflecting on the water were so pretty. You can also see the Marina Bay Sands in the background. Kuah’s not particular to this building but I think it’s fun. I never actually eat, drink or stay there because it’s so expensive.
