Today’s adventure was all about lunch at Kéhli Vendéglő. It is about a 5 mile walk from our apartment so it was a great way to get in a 10 mile walk. The walk took us to the Buda side for the first time. To get there we crossed the Liberty Bridge. It is the shortest bridge in Budapest. The bridge opened in 1896 in celebration of Hungary’s 1000 birthday. It was destroyed in WWII but was the first to be rebuilt and was opened again in 1946.

The restaurant had a very interesting menu which you can see at https://kehli.hu/en/menu-english/. Although the waiter spoke English to us I didn’t hear any of the guests speaking English. Kuah opted for the boiled deer sirloin with pickled vegetable sauce and bread dumplings. The bread dumplings were just like Grandma used to make only with some herbs in them as well. They were absolutely amazing!
This time I didn’t order so well. I got the carp fillet fried in breadcrumbs and vinegary potato salad. It was just ok. However, I did suggest we add a side dish and Kuah choose pickled cucumber. This were delicious and refreshing. I’m finding that I like sour cream in Hungary. I didn’t really like it before but what they have here is really wonderful.

After lunch we ordered dessert. We knew we wanted to try the pancake “Gundel” with walnut cream, and chocolate sauce in a rum flame. As I hadn’t finished my lunch and Kuah was feeling hungry still we decided to also order the Hungarian poppy seed bread pudding with vanilla custard. And here is where I tell you poppy seeds can be yummier than chocolate. The Gundel wasn’t very good. I had just one bite. Kuah like the walnut cream but not the dish as a whole. The bread pudding was a wow dish. It’s flavors were delicate with just the right amount of sweetness.

We took a different route back from the restaurant to our apartment. This time we went on the Margaret Bridge (Margit hid). It was blown up by retreating Germans in WWII. It has 6 arches connected by 7 pillars on which are sculptures from French artists Thabard. It has great views of the Hungarian Parliament.

On our way home we saw lots of great architecture and found some fun streets to enjoy. Once we got near our place we split up to run a few errands. In total I walked 12.48 miles.
