Hawker Centers & Coffee Shops Visited: Armenian Street Char Kway Teow, That Coffee Place & Poh Lee Satay
Today we took a MRT to Buangkok station to visit some hawker centers and coffee shops in the heartland. The heartland is more the outskirts or countryside of Singapore. Although, when I say countryside I don’t mean farmers and fields. Although there are more open spaces and parks. It means more that most of the buildings are dedicated to housing rather than shops and businesses. Here’s a picture I took along the way.
The first place that we walked to was the Armenian Street Char Kway Teow. It is a savory dish with noodles, egg and cockles. Kuah really loves this dish. Although, he thought this particular version was just OK. It’s not one I particularly like as I’m not a fan of cockles. Also, the noodles are meant to be soft and I prefer firmer noodles. The flavor is nice though. We also ordered a kopi and iced Milo. Kopi is a popular coffee here that is made with condensed milk. You can see the layer of condensed milk at the bottom of the coffee in the below picture.
After this we went on a bit of a wild goose chase (not shown on the below maps). We tried to find the satay shop that was next on our list but just ended up in an apartment complex. By this time I was really hungry because I’d been up for 4 hours and only had a drink. So, we decided to pop into a coffee shop that we had recently passed. We didn’t want to order too much as we still wanted to find the satay shop so we shared an order of seafood fried rice. Not sure if it was delicious because I was hungry or because it was delicious. I took a picture of the coffee shop but in my rush to eat completely forgot to take a picture of the dish.
After getting a bit of food in my belly we went out to find the satay shop again. And this time we were successful. I really liked the satay sauce at this shop. The light color you see in the middle of the sauce is crushed pineapple. Being that I’m a super picky eater I wasn’t in love with the actual chicken. It was too fatty to me. My husband is the best and he ate the fatty pieces and gave me all of the lean pieces. Sometimes he would eat the first piece of chicken on the stick and then give me the rest. I’m so spoiled!
All of these food stalls were at the beginning of our walk. As we continued walking we eventually needed to make another stop to rest and cool off. Although there’s no sun at night it’s still really hot and humid. So much so that I continually sweat, yuck! When I get home from our walks my legs always feel gritty from the dried salt on them, double yuck!!
We almost stopped at a McDonlads but held off to find a local place. As we walked in I saw a man who had an ice cream dish that had a straw and ice in it and thought, oooh I bet this place has some fun drinks.
I was so right! We got homemade ice jelly honey lime with longan. It has a lime honey flavored jelly that is similar to jello in a tangy lime juice with some longan fruit. You can drink the jelly through the straw. It was sweet, sour, cold, refreshing, really just perfect.
I know, as my Mom taught me, that 2 wrongs don’t make a right. In this case I’m hoping 2 bad pictures make a good one. While we were walking we saw passed a lot of celebrations near Little India. We weren’t sure what it was for but turns out they were dedicating a new temple. Here is one of the floats we saw.
We didn’t take a picture of the temple they were dedicating but we did take a picture of the moon over this temple. It’s not as good as it looked in real life but the below pictures will give you an idea. Hopefully next time we’ll get a better shot.
