Miles Walked: 11
Restaurants Visited: Legendary Hong Kong Restaurant
This weekend Kuah and I decided to try and do 2 long walks, one on Saturday and another on Sunday. They were both about 11 miles. Most of the pictures will be from Saturday but I’ve included a few bonus ones from Sunday’s walk as well. We’re planning on repeating Sunday’s walk next weekend so I’ll snap more pics then.
We started off taking the train to Boon Lay to eat at the Legendary Hong Kong Restaurant. This is in a mall that has a whole section of Hong Kong food and stores. As we went during normal dinner time there was quite a line to get in. If you look closely at the middle picture you can see Kuah waiting in line as I snap pictures. He always takes such good care of me.
- Themed area of the mall
- Can you spot Kuah?
- Fun street sign
I thought the street sign was very appropriate as we were total gluttens with this meal. There were some of the old standbys but also a few new dishes. We tried a shaved coconut cream bun. It was different than what I expected but still very good. I usually find cream in Chinese desserts to be a bit waxy but this was really delicious. The other dessert we tried was peanut butter toast with condensed milk and margarine. It was OK but not worth the calories so we didn’t finish it.
We also got a rice roll. I usually hate these as the texture is just strange to me. This one had a shrimp spring roll in the center which provided enough crunch to change it up. Kuah really loved it and we both thought it was the best one we’ve ever had. Although for me that just meant that it was edible. I would share it with him again and maybe one day I’ll learn to love it too!
Another different dish we tried was turnip cake with bean curd shavings. I liked the crunch of the bean curd shavings but found the turnip cake wasn’t really to my taste. Now, if they had made it with potato I would have totally devoured it!
- shaved coconut cream bun
- peanut butter condensed milk toast
- rice roll with shrimp spring roll
- fried turnip with beancurd shavings
- fried beancurd skin with shrimp
- steamed shrimp dumplings
- beancurd skin with pork and shrimp
- garlic spinach and shrimp dumplings
- sweet and sour fish
This mall also has a Japanese street and a Malaysian street. Originally I had planned to go take a few pics there before leaving but after so much food I didn’t want to see anymore. It was definitely time for our 11 mile walk home. Sometimes, I’m really surprised about how much Kuah and I can eat!
As we exited the mall we found that they had some tents set up. They usually just have some fun snacks, lots of things on sticks, and cheap housewares. We’ve walked around quite a few of these so didn’t feel the need to spend time here. We did stop long enough to snap a few pics though.
You can see my legs are nice and skinny but my stomach is so HUGE from dim sum 🙂
- Tent market
- Stuffed Karen
Our walk home from here was pretty non eventful. Of course there were several potty stops, but that’s a whole other blog. We rested partway home but just had a drink as our bellies were too full to eat again.
The next day we got up and started a walk again. We made Sunday fried rice day. I didn’t take pictures but should have as our first dish was $20 and tiny but our second was $10 and huge. So, why the expensive first dish? It was all about the view. We sat right by the river and got to enjoy a breeze and cool drink. I would definitely go back to this area again, especially when it’s not busy. Then you can order just a little and relax for a long time. You can see Kuah’s coconut drink in the picture.
One the way back we passed one of my favorite buildings. I love the bright colorful shutters. Even at night it really pops.
