Kuah and I have had so many delicious meals and snacks around town. Not all of them need their own blog so I’m combining some here.
This restaurant was super duper cute inside. I say this restaurant because I forgot to write down the name. Here Kuah had his first stuffed cabbage in Hungary. I had a chicken salad. The food was pretty good but it was the atmosphere that really made the meal enjoyable. From old wooden staircases to instruments hanging from the ceiling, there were lots of fun things to see inside.

Another place we went to was a stop for me but Kuah really ended up enjoying the place as well. I wanted to have a nice rich cup of hot chocolate. After reading some reviews we decided to try Cafe Zsivago. The hot chocolate was thick and rich but not too sweet. Kuah ordered a Russian coffee and also caviar and rye bread. The caviar came with champagne so he was doubly lucky. Both caviar and goose liver are much cheaper in Budapest than in the US.
I loved the decor of the place. It was just like Grandma’s home. Lots of doilies and flower prints. It wasn’t crowded and were able to just sit, relax and enjoy our treats. Since it was raining outside, warm treats were welcome.

We have been eating Hungarian food for the most part. One day we did spot a Chinese crepe place and decided to check it out. It was run by 2 brothers from mainland China. My crepe had cabbage, cheese and egg. Kuah’s had ham, egg and cabbage. He got his spicy but I got mine mild. Both also had a crunchy noodle layer which provided a good balance to the soft texture of the crepe and fillings. It was a fun stop that switched up the flavors a bit.

The weather this week wasn’t so great, lots of clouds and rain. On a day when it was drizzling a bit and I had gone for a morning walk we didn’t want to go too far. We also didn’t want to go to the restaurants we’d already visited. I started googling for restaurants and came across one that had bread dumplings and thought, “YES! this is what I want”. So we went for lunch at Antre Etterem (etterem is restaurant in Hungarian). They said they did traditional dishes in a modern way.
They had good reviews but we were surprised to find the restaurant was empty when we arrived. This had me a bit worried but after looking at the menu we believed it was because it was a bit more expensive than nearby restaurants. Kuah started out with a buffalo goulash and then had venison tenderloin with parsnip puree and forest mushroom ravioli. We shared an order of pickled beets with horseradish. Unfortunately, unlike the Ukrainian beets these had a very earthy flavor so I left them for Kuah to eat.
I had Omaha angus beef vadas with homemade bread dumplings. I was a bit worried about ordering the beef but it ended up being very lean and easy to eat. The bread dumplings were fancier that what I’ve had before but still enjoyable. I do have to say that although they were good they were not as good as the regular version. One thing I’ve found here is that they like to add herbs to the bread dumplings. It gives them a fresh flavor and I plan to experiment with this later.
Overall it was a very good meal and Kuah and I both agreed that we would go back to this restaurant again, if there’s time.

We said we’d like to go back to Antre Etterem and we did. The second time we went I got the same main dish but Kuah switched things up by getting Angus Beef Tenderloin Budapest. This came with foie gras in a pea puree. He really enjoyed it. I decided to try their version of the traditional Hungarian dessert, Somloi Galuska. This is a Hungarian trifle with rum chocolate ice cream. It was absolutely amazing and worth every calorie. It has soft cake with crunch bits on top. Sweet whipped cream and chocolate sauce contrasted with tangy orange sauce and refreshing chocolate rum ice cream.
