We were quickly discovering that the streets in the towns in Umbria were much steeper than originally thought. While this is great for building calfs it did make it a bit challenging. Some of them have escalators to help you up but it still leaves a lot of steep walking. Living here and walking these streets daily would be great! But if you’re not used to it you need to make sure not to overextend and injure yourself.
Thankfully Assisi offered a tuk tuk tour. We had switched plans last minute but Mom was able to book a tuk tuk tour for the next day. Unfortunately, an hour after booking they called and cancelled saying they had a system error. The next day a happy turn of events occurred as we were pulling into the parking lot in Assisi. They had a time open up and were able to fit Mom in for a tuk tuk tour. She loved the tour and learned a lot about the city’s history.
While Mom was on the tuk tuk tour Kuah and I took off on foot to explore the city. Assisi turned out to be my favorite town in Umbria. Seeing the architecture and walking on the cobblestone streets gave you the feeling of going back in time. While the shops and restaurants provided the convenience of modern day life.
We did a bit of fun shopping here. First we walked by an amazing sweet shop where Kuah was able to get a hazelnut gelato to enjoy right away and some nougat for later. The nougat turned out being the best nougat Kuah had ever tried. It was choc full of nuts and had the perfect amount of chew. We also found some cookies for Mom. I was the luckiest because Kuah helped me to pick out a ring that was locally designed and made.
After Mom’s tuk tuk tour she gave us a call and we headed to meet her. We then went to lunch. One great thing about our eating schedule is we could get into restaurants easily. Many people prefer to eat a late lunch but we prefer early lunches. Our main limitation was picking a restaurant that was not too far uphill. The meal was relaxing and Mom got to try her first panzenella salad.
After lunch we headed to see the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi. This is probably the main attraction in Assisi. We saw the lower floor and the vault. We decided to head back to the car instead of going to the upper floor. It ended up being the perfect amount of adventure time for the day. We even had time to enjoy the pool when we got back to the villa.
