Lake Como was a surprise addition to our vacation. We had originally planned to fly into Zurich but all of the rewards tickets were wait-listed. After some research we found we could get tickets from Singapore to Milan on an overnight flight. Neither of us were very interested in Milan but we had heard good things about Lake Como so decided that was the place to go.
We were lucky that we both got some sleep on the plane and landed in Lake Come at 5:30 am feeling ready to go. We got to the Hilton Lake Como before 7 and as they were sold out the night before we were unable to check in. So we stowed our bags with them and headed out to town.

The absolutely beautiful scenery chased away any lethargy I had left from the flight. It was a nice walk from the hotel to the downtown area. We stopped for a coffee and pastry and then headed to the funicular. This went from Como to Brunate. It wasn’t too busy at this time so we got to be right by the window and enjoy the view on the way up.
Once at the top we did a few walks. The first was an easy walk to a tiny water fountain. The second was to a lighthouse, Phare de Volta. This walk ended up being more than we had bargained for. It was very steep and poor Kuah was carrying a backpack with his laptop and other computer gear. It wasn’t designed for hiking and made the walk a bit tough on Kuah. We still enjoyed it and got some great views.

After the walk we took the funicular back down to Como. We were hungry so we stopped in one of the first restaurants we saw. Being right next to the funicular entrance we thought we wouldn’t be so good but we were surprised by a very nice lunch. The bread was delicious and it was hard to not eat too much of it while waiting for my food. I stayed healthy with grilled octopus and broccolini. Kuah got a risotto but I thought my dish was better so I shared my octopus with him. Once we were stuffed headed back to the hotel to check in and rest.
Our hotel room had a wonderful view of the lake. It was a bit weird that the sofa was designed more for just 1 person but the rest of the room was great. We were so tired that we just ordered room service pizza that night and fell asleep. I was only going to eat 1-2 slices of pizza but in Italy even hotel pizza is yummy and I ate way to much. Good thing we had walked a lot.
