Kuah and I have been trying to get to the gym twice a week. With our hiking trip coming up this summer he’s set a goal of us being able to do 1 pull-up before the trip. I am so very far from that goal. Sometimes I feel so fit but when I go to do a pull-up I realize how weak I am.
Of course, after a tough workout there’s nothing better than a crazy splurge meal. We tried to order healthy-ish but got a few surprises. The first place we went to was Big and Small Restaurant. This Tanjong Pagar restaurant features northern Chinese cuisine, which ya’ll know I love.
Kuah had a bowl of spicy noodles, which I stayed away from as he can eat so much more than me 🙁 We also had gong bao ji ding, scallops with broccoli and cabbage and mushrooms. The mushrooms are a special type that is found in northern China. It’s one of the few mushroom dishes I enjoy.
There were a few unhealthy, but delicious surprises. The scallops were pan fried with a bit of a flour coating. I was hoping for a healthier scallop but they were soooo delicious. The chicken in the gong bao ji ding was deep fried but it had this wonderful spicy flavor – similar to yang rou chuan (grilled lamb).

The next time we decided to go to a Korean restaurant called Running Man for our after workout dinner. This restaurant was supposed to have a healthy grilled dish with squid, chicken and lots of vegetables. I’ve included the menu picture below. It turned out to be more of a soup with very few vegetables and lots of cheese.
Kuah and I tried not to eat too much cheese but as the cheese cooked on the hot plate it became a temptation too good to resist. It got brown and slightly crispy at the bottom and was ooey gooey at the top. By the end of the meal all of the cheese was in our bellies.

Thankfully Tanjong Pagar is about a 2 mile walk from our place so we can work off some of those calories on the way home. The Singapore walking lifestyle really lets us enjoy more foods and burn the calories as we walk around.
