Celebrating a 10th anniversary on just one day really seems like the celebration doesn’t live up to the momentous occasion so Kuah and I spread our celebrating out over a week. First, we somewhat played hokey from work. Of course we had to check in and keep up with some tickets, but in between we took loooong breaks and enjoyed a lot of TV.
One morning we went to see Solo at the Cathay Platinum theater. Solo, was disappointing but the Platinum theater is always nice. It was especially good as we had the whole theater to ourselves. What makes this theater experience so enjoyable is that there are fewer seats. The seats are pairs of recliners. They also give you free popcorn, chicken wings, chicken nuggets and tater tots. We balanced that food with a 7 & 1/2 mile walk home.

On our actual anniversary we went to LaCala, a Spanish restaurant in Bugis. The atmosphere was really nice. We had an early meal so it wasn’t crowded at all. We got some tapas and a paella. Kuah enjoyed the sardines on toast and I enjoyed the chicken croquettes. We also shared a lobster paella. It was really delicious although I would say it was more the texture of a risotto than a paella. The lobster was delicious (as long as you don’t compare it to lobster in New England) and served in a way that was easy to eat. Of course the meal would not have been complete without chocolate desert.
Kuah and I don’t drink much these days but I did order a glass of Sangria to go with dinner. It was so refreshing and delicious. We might try making it the next time we host a family dinner.
Desert was a chocolate lava cake that was really good. Kuah was surprised I liked it because it’s not something I usually order. I must admit that lava cakes are delicious but I really prefer a well done chocolate cake. The lava is a bit of a cheat and can sometimes make it too sweet. A slice of moist delicious chocolate cake is harder to find but much more satisfying. I know I’ll at least get one on my birthday from Kuah.

Of course no weekend would be complete without some long walks. This weekend we did a 15 mile walk on Saturday and a 12 mile walk on Sunday.
Saturday we repeated a walk from last weekend. We stopped midway through our walk and went into the little Chinese restaurant. We got 2 dishes, one was great and the other was average. The fried rice was really disappointing but the tofu with shrimp was delicious. The shrimp were so big and sweet.

On the way home we stopped in Kampong Glam which has loads of middle eastern restaurants that stay open late. We arrived around 11:30 pm and had lots of choices. Kuah got some fresh squeezed pomegranate juice. They used a machine to squeeze the pomegranates that seemed to take a lot of elbow grease. We also got some great eggplant dip and chicken skewers. We’ll definitely head to this area again.

The only sad thing on the walk was I accidentally stepped on a snail and crushed it, and Kuah accidentally kicked another. They are often out on the sidewalks in the evenings. We tried to avoid all of them but on on stretch there was not enough light to see the path. We’ll avoid that section next time as I hate to hurt living things that are just minding their own business.
On Sunday we took the train to Boon Lay and headed to the Japanese area of the mall. The first stand we came across was selling roasted marshmallows. They had lots of fun flavors. I picked red velvet and vanilla. Then they roasted them with a small torch. They were very yummy!

Then it was time for dinner. I really couldn’t decide where to go. First we looked at some restaurants. Then we thought maybe the food court would be good. Kuah even lined up for food. I’m so spoiled. Whenever we go to a food court or hawker center Kuah offers to get in line and bring all the food to the table! But before ordering anything he spotted a ramen shop. I’m glad he did because they had great ramen. We also shared some gyoza.

Our last hurrah was a lobster buffet that Kuah discovered online. They had a huge variety of lobsters including, chilled, grilled, chili, black pepper, laksa, toast, and salad. Kuah and I at 10 lobsters each, for 10 years of marriage. We really should of thought of it as 10 years together and eaten 5 each because I felt so sick afterwards.
The lobster itself was pretty tasteless. But the grill gave it a nice char that was enjoyable. The ones in sauce were good except for the salted egg sauce which ended up ended up being way too rich. The lobster toast was advertised as a lobster roll but it was really a bit of diced lobster on toasted ciabatta bread.
The desserts were delicious. They had some great chocolate treats that I somehow managed to fit in. They also had some asian desserts (kueh), but you know me and chocolate, there was just no room for them in my belly. I did manage some raspberry sorbet that Kuah found at the buffet.
As we were leaving the waiter ran over yelling “Wait, Wait”. We thought maybe he didn’t realize we had paid but he said they had a special anniversary dessert for us. At that time Kuah and I were so stuffed we said thank you but we just can’t fit it in. So, they gave us a chocolate cake to take home. It was big enough for 4 slices!
